Is Social Media BAD?

With all the buzz going around about Essena O' Neill quitting social media, let me give you my two cents on the topic. I am a blogger which makes one of those people who use social media for self-promotion and in some way, I have made social media a huge part of my life. I've been blogging for around three years now and up to this day, I love what I do. It hits a nerve to see how this one girl is bringing down the whole social media community for no valid reason. Essena claims that social media ruined her and made her miserable. But the truth behind this is she's just upset over a break up with a boy. (You can watch the whole story here.) I know how girls are. I'm a girl myself and we do tend to get a little crazy when it comes to matters of the heart. I guess this is how she copes up with getting dumped. If there is any truth to what she is saying, she is still partly to blame. Too much of anything can be a bad thing. Let me site an example: eating excessive food can lead to health problems. Does that automatically mean that food is bad? No, it simply means that you need to control your food intake. Same goes with social media. I understand how people get addicted to it. There are times when it happens to me as well. I used to be constantly on my phone that I forgot to live in the moment. It's a good thing the people around me reminded me to detach myself from my phone once in a while. At the end of the day, it's still your choice. I could have chosen not to listen to my friends and just continued to live in my Instagram bubble. Essena was the one who started her own Youtube account. She continued to post all those videos and she was the one who accepted all those sponsorships. She made all those decisions herself. She isn't owning up to her choices and what makes me really angry is that because of her, people have forgotten the good that social media has brought to our lives as well. Everyone now has the chance to be heard. Not only celebrities are worth following. If people like your personality, they will follow you too. Small businesses with little capital can now stand up to big monopolies, information is easily shared with one another and social media has created so many job opportunities. So please, Essena, just be like a regular girl and lock yourself in your room and cry about your break up. I, on the otherhand, will continue to do what I do and post on social media as much as I want to.
