Corregidor

Corregidor comes from the Spanish word corregir which means to correct. It was used by the Spanish as a prison before it became the front line of defense of Manila. Because of it's location, it was the ideal place to store artilleries to protect the city. During World War II, the Japanese saw Corregidor as a threat and continued to bomb the island until they finally surrendered on May 6, 1942. They were the last island to accept defeat against the Japanese. These are just a few of the facts that you will learn when you visit Corregidor.

Getting There

If you're coming from Manila, there's only one way to Corregidor and that's by riding a ferry. Sun Cruises offers daily trips. It's just an hour and half away from the Seaside terminal. The rates depend on whether you're going for the day or overnight. We opted to later to get the full experience.

Historical Walking Tour

As soon as you land in Corregidor, the walking tour will start. Yes, no time is wasted so it's best to bring your own water and snacks. From the ferry you will transfer to an al fresco tram where you'll meet your tour guide. Our tour guide's name was Felix. He was witty and everyone cracked up at his jokes but can be a little racist.

Our first stop was the mile-long barracks. It was three stories high and measures 1250 feet that it became known as the world's largest military barracks

Next, we visited Battery Way where you can find the remains of the artillerties

Accommodation

Corregidor Inn
is the one and only hotel on the island. It isn't a 5-star hotel with state of the art facilities but you will fall in love with its charm. Considering that it has been around for more than 20 years, it is in impeccable shape.

Activities

Aside from the historical tour, there is also an optional tunnel lateral tour and the Japanese tunnel tour. During the tunnel lateral tour, you'll get the chance to visit the old hospital and walk through the underground tunnel. This was definitely the highlight of my trip. We were supposed to do the Japanese tunnel tour as well but it starts at 5 am and we aren't morning people. We ended up sleeping in.

There are also activities like: kayaking, ATV, and zip line to keep you entertained on the island.
